Nicolas Becker est l'un des bruiteurs, sound designers et compositeurs les plus recherchés dans le monde. Il travaille pour de très grands cinéastes, collabore avec des artistesmajeurs de l'art depuis plus de 25 ans. Animé par une insatiable curiosité, il collecte des sons et procède par expérimentation pour inventer et composer des univers sonores singuliers. Pour lui chaque nouveau projet se doit d'être considéré comme un prototype sur lequel un raisonnement conceptuel, sensoriel et scénographique doit être mis en place afin de créer à chaque fois de nouveaux territoires d'exploration et de jeu.

«Nous voulions rendre compte de l’intelligence collective du peuple des Krahôs»João Salaviza (né en 1984) a fait ses études à l’école supérieure de théâtre et de cinéma de Lisbonne et à l’Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires. Son premier long-métrage, Montanha, un adolescent à Lisbonne, a fait ses débuts en 2015 au Festival du Film de Venise. En 2018, il présente au Festival de Cannes Le Chant de la Forêt (Prix spécial du jury- Un Certain Regard), co-réalisé avec Renée Nader Messora (née en 1979). Elle est titulaire d’un diplôme en technique cinématographique de l’Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires. C’est en tant que directrice de la photo pour le court-métrage intitulé Pohí qu’elle fait la connaissance du peuple Krahô.
Les cinéaste reviendront sur leur méthode de travail en compagnie des Krahôs, sur les liens tissés au long court avec la communauté indigène du Nord-Est du Brésil et leur rejet de l’exotisation.

"Joao Salaviza et Renée Nader Messora en forment un duo : lui est portugais, elle brésilienne, et ils fonctionnent à deux comme une petite unité de production. Apparu sur la planète festivalière il y a six ans avec le stupéfiant Chant de la forêt (2018), le binôme poursuit un travail au long cours avec la tribu kraho, branche du peuple indigène timbira, habitants originaires du Cerrado, vaste région recoupant la forêt amazonienne, étendue sur plusieurs pays d’Amérique du Sud. En s’enfonçant dans la forêt, les cinéastes semblent avoir remonté le fleuve historique du cinéma, pour en livrer une version élémentaire, joignant ethnographie et onirisme." Pour clore la seconde session de Baab, nous vous invitons à découvrir dans le cadre du rendez-vous mensuel Double Vision, le premier long-métrage de Renée Nader Messora et João Salaviza , Le chant de la forêt, aux côtés de Mérapi de Malena Szlam et The Nightside of The Sky de Rhayne Vermette.
Merapi - 2021, Canada, 8 mn, Silencieux de Malena Szlam
Une étude en contournement du mont Merapi, en Indonésie. Oscillant autour du volcan, MERAPI se caractérise par la présence silencieuse de ses grondements et de sa lave. Presque toujours au centre, le volcan se dissipe souvent derrière les nuages, tel un fantôme. L’œuvre s’articule silencieusement autour de l’empreinte ondulante du volcan sur son environnement : la fumée à travers les arbres, la pluie qui s’écrase sur ses pentes et la riche fertilité de ses sols. Une œuvre aussi sensible aux variations de la lumière à travers les tourbillons du grain 16 mm et de l’atmosphère qu’à ce que signifie vivre à l’horizon du volcan, situé près de la ville densément peuplée de Yogyakarta.
The Nightside of The Sky - 2023, US, 5 mn de Rhayne Vermette
Dans ce court métrage expérimental spécialement commandé pour l’album *All the Haunts Be Ours vol. 2* de Severin, des images tirées du film *The White Reindeer* sont redonnées vie grâce à des techniques de tirage par contact et de tirage optique.
Rhayne Vermette est autodidacte. Son travail met l’accent sur l’interruption de l’image à travers le collage, la photographie et le cinéma analogique. Les thèmes du lieu, du temps et du rythme s’expriment à travers de riches couches de fiction, d’animation, de reconstitutions et d’interruptions divines.

"Une nuit, Ihjãc fait un rêve étrange qui l’incite à se lever pour traverser la forêt et atteindre le pied d’une cascade. Le jeune homme, issu du peuple indigène Krahô, entend alors la voix de son défunt père. Celui-ci lui rappelle qu’il est temps d’organiser la fête funéraire en son honneur. Car c’est seulement après la fin de la période de deuil que les disparus rejoignent le village des morts et laissent les vivants en paix. Troublé par cette apparition, Ihjãc n’ose l’ébruiter, de peur d’être vu comme le chaman qu’il refuse de devenir… Centrée sur le bouleversant secret d’Ihjãc, la première partie du film raconte aussi le quotidien au sein de la communauté, entre documentaire et fiction – la Brésilienne Messora et le Portugais Salaviza ont travaillé en étroite collaboration avec les Krahôs. Dans une étonnante deuxième partie, Ihjãc, désireux de fuir son destin, se rend en ville. Là, l’incompréhension est totale: une fonctionnaire se moque de ses angoisses, et lui réclame une carte de mutuelle dont il ignore l’existence. Tout en décrivant avec sensibilité le désarroi d’Ihjãc, le film récuse l’opposition simpliste entre société moderne et mode de vie traditionnel: les filles krahôs discutent du dernier vernis à la mode tandis que, sur un écran de télé, les visages fervents des supporteurs brésiliens blancs illustrent la dimension rituelle du football." Nicolas Becker is one of the world’s most sought-after sound effects artists, sound designers, and composers. He has worked with leading filmmakers and collaborated with major artists for over 25 years. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, he collects sounds and uses experimentation to invent and compose unique soundscapes. For him, every new project must be treated as a prototype upon which a conceptual, sensory, and scenographic framework must be established in order to continually create new territories for exploration and play.

“We wanted to capture the collective intelligence of the Krahô people.” João Salaviza studied at the Lisbon Higher School of Theater and Cinema and at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. His first feature film, *Montanha*, about a teenager in Lisbon, premiered in 2015 at the Venice Film Festival. In 2018, he presented The Song of the Forest (Special Jury Prize – Un Certain Regard) at the Cannes Film Festival, co-directed with Renée Nader Messora. She holds a degree in cinematography from the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. It was while serving as director of photography for the short film *Pohi* that she first encountered the Kraho people.
The filmmakers will discuss their working methods with the Kraho, the bonds forged over time with the indigenous community of northeastern Brazil, and their rejection of exoticization.

"Joao Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora make up a duo: he is Portuguese, she is Brazilian, and together they function as a small production unit. Having burst onto the festival scene six years ago with the stunning *Song of the Forest* (2018), the pair continues a long-term project with the Krahô tribe, a branch of the Timbira indigenous people, who are native to the Cerrado, a vast region spanning the Amazon rainforest and stretching across several South American countries. As they venture deep into the forest, the filmmakers seem to have traveled back up the historical river of cinema, delivering a primal version that blends ethnography and dreamlike imagery." Merapi - 2021, Canada, 8 mn, Silent By Malena Szlam
A circumlocutory study of Mount Merapi, Indonesia. Shifting back and forth around the volcano, MERAPI is marked by the silent presence of its rumble and lava. Almost always at the centre, the volcano often slips away behind the clouds, a ghost. The work is silently structured around the rippling impression of the volcano on its surrounds: smoke through trees, the breaking of rain against its slopes and the rich fertility of its soils. A work as sensitive to the shift in light through swirls of 16mm grain and atmosphere as it is to what it is like to live within the horizon of the volcano, located near the densely populated Yogyakarta.

One night, Ihjãc has a strange dream that prompts him to get up, cross the forest, and reach the base of a waterfall. There, the young man—a member of the indigenous Krahô people—hears the voice of his late father. His father reminds him that it is time to organize the funeral ceremony in his honor. For it is only after the mourning period ends that the departed join the village of the dead and leave the living in peace. Troubled by this apparition, Ihjãc dares not speak of it, for fear of being seen as the shaman he refuses to become… Centered on Ihjãc’s deeply moving secret, the first part of the film also depicts daily life within the community, blending documentary and fiction—the Brazilian director Messora and the Portuguese director Salaviza worked closely with the Krahô people. In a surprising second part, Ihjãc, eager to escape his fate, heads to the city. There, he is met with total incomprehension: a government official mocks his anxieties and demands a health insurance card he didn’t even know existed. While sensitively depicting Ihjãc’s distress, the film rejects the simplistic opposition between modern society and traditional ways of life: Krahô girls discuss the latest nail polish trends while, on a TV screen, the fervent faces of white Brazilian soccer fans illustrate the ritualistic dimension of the sport." Featuring critical essays, curated film / video programs, visiting international filmmakers and focusing on films drawn from the rich and complicated histor/ies of visual anthropology and experimental cinema, DOUBLE VISION looks to draw an emotional, political, visceral and critical line of influence between what is felt, what is seen, what is known and what can be understood.
BAAB is a unique year-long program designed for artists and researchers working on audiovisual projects at the intersection of art, anthropology, and cinema.
